Thursday 22nd May OeirasWe left Cascias on Tuesday morning for the short passage to Oeiras; only 5 miles. As we were heading in a south easterly direction, we managed to sail with the headsail, achieving a respectable 6 knots. By midday we were moored alongside, fuel topped up, and paperwork sorted in the marina. As we had been at anchor for three days, the laundry had mounted up so one large load done in the marina washer and a couple of small loads in our washing machine. The decks needed washing down and water topping up, all before we looked at the jobs list. As we face onto a boardwalk of bars and restaurants we are moored bows first which gives us some privacy in the cockpit. Luckily the bars/restaurants are not too busy so the noise is minimal and the playlist agreeable!! After one of Simon’s risotto, reading time and listening to the Archers we retired to our beds, a little noisy in our cabin as the wind picked up and ropes and fenders creaked. Yesterday we visited the Gardens of Royal Estate, a short train ride away at Caxias, bargain tickets three euros for us again! It was built in the 18th century and used for short stays in the summer months. It was so tranquil, hardly anyone else there; a very peaceful meander looking at the sculptures and buildings and a network of clipped box hedges. A very pleasant change from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon. After coffee and Portuguese custard tarts at nearby cafe, we caught the train back to Oeiras, called at the supermarket, then back to the boat. More jobs - to list a few - velcro sewn onto the cockpit hood to secure, 3rd reef rigging changed, log cleaned, rudder for the hydrovane cleaned. A chicken roasted in the Ninja gave us a tasty dinner after pre-dinner drinks ashore. We thought it was happy hour but miss read the sign - only happy hour for oysters, two euros instead of three euros, we declined! Simon managed to download an episode of Chelsea Flower Show so Sally and I enjoyed watching that - very envious of the glorious flowers. The weather has improved; it is very sunny now although the wind picks up in the evenings. Luckily the marina is quite shelterd and as Nigel had adjusted the ropes we had a quieter night. This morning we heard foorsteps along the jetty by our boat. Sally looked out and discovered a bag with 3 freshly baked small cobs, courtesy of the marina. Delicious with our coffee and a lovely surprise. We have decided to stay another night so will leave on Saturday for the 70 mile passage to Nazare. A long day so an early start and hopefully some sailing. Catherine ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
