We got off to a great start, leaving Suffolk yacht
Harbour at about 1045, just in time to catch the last of the Orwell's ebb. The
sun was shining, life was, and is still, good! Taking 30min turns at the tiller,
Ian, Peter and Dick did most of the steering and Richard took over in the more
dodgy bits over the banks. We got a bit off track which meant we had to cross
the end of the Gunfleet which got us back into Kings Channel and on track.
We were bucked to spot a couple of small cetaceans slowly heading north in that
wonderful rolling motion acrossn the surface. We think they were Harbour
Porpoises and about 2m long. We saw few birds - a couple of cormorants and
then after the Sunk crossing and in Fisherman's Gap we heard the 'skreek' of
Sandwich terns. So there must be some fish about, probably sprats.
Off North Foreland (looking very handsome in the
evening sun) there were eight merchant ships at anchor. We are motoring now,
against the ebb tide. towwards Ramsgate where we hope to stay the night. We will
stock up on stores there.
Dick did the cheffing today - bacon & eggs,
pasta and tuna, bacon sarnies and lots of teas and coffees.
Everyone well and pleased to have made such a good
start.
