Sonar's new crew of John Apps, Heather Hespe and myself (Ray Bridges)
arrived back courtesy of Virgin Atlantic in the idyllic spice island of
Grenada last Thursday evening and we have been busy since then getting Sonar
prepared for sea again. She has been lying idle at Le Phare Bleu Marina in
southern Grenada (see http://lepharebleu.com/en/overview.html) without her
sails up since last June waiting for the threat of hurricanes to pass. Now
with a few days of tlc she is cleaned up, re-rigged, checked out and just
about ready to go.
We plan a short sea-trial trip (about 3/4hrs) around the coast to St Georges
tomorrow to check everything vital is working as it should and to load up
with provisions from the local supermarket. Then the plan is to head towards
the British Virgin Isles (BVI) about 500 miles, 3 day passage to the north
of us here. If all goes well we should be there sometime on Friday ready to
start our planned exploration of the Caribbean. Looking through the guide
books it seems as if we could spend a whole year just cruising around the
BVI alone - if it's half as good as it's claimed it will be well worth
spending several days there. But we have hopes to be able to visit several
of the other Caribbean Islands as we make our way slowly back towards our
home base at Le Phare Bleu in Grenada arriving in time to fly home for Xmas
with our families.
I hope to keep Sonar's blog site updated with our positions and progress and
you a can follow our explorations here ... http://blog.mailasail.com/sonar.
