We left Moorea in the early evening to overnight to
Huahine. The light wind dropped away and we ended up motoring all of the way.
Close to Huahine, the squalls started to come through but the wind came around
the island and was on the nose. The pass through the reef was easy in spite of
the fact that big swells were breaking on the reef on either side. The board
riders were out in force on the northern side and they have some small boats
that they keep on moorings inside the reef to take them out when the surf
is up.
We decided to motor to Avae Beach instead of
anchoring off the town of Fare. The channel is well marked but does have some
shallow spots, especially in the last section before the bay. We anchored
in 13m of water in a very picturesque bay off the beach. The catamarans
were able to anchor in the shallow water inside the reef. It was very windy that
day and night with gusts over 25kn. We decided to have an easy day on the
boat.

Next day was less windy and we motored up towards
the point to see whether there was any decent snorkelling. Again, it was
disappointing and we walked around the point to check out the local marae
(ancient site). It looked as though it could have been cobbled together from
coral slabs over a couple of weekends.
The colours inside the lagoon are
superb.

reef.
The local marae.
This spearfisherman had a very productive
morning.
The following day, we motored past Fare and out
through the northern pass towards Raiatea.
