Yesterday at lunchtime we dropped the main and
removed the chaffed element of the halliard having had the main at full hoist
for 24 hours (the time taken in the past for chaffe to work through the sheath
and start on the core). However, this morning after only 18 hours at full hoist,
the main halliard parted. An unfortunate consequence of us pushing to make a
timely arrival in Miami.
At the moment we have a 1.5-2 m swell from the
north making it too dangerous to have someone up the mast to re-run the main
halliard. Our forecast indicates SW F7-8 in 24 hours, veering NE F5 tomorrow
night, so we may be able to find some shelter at the northern end of San
Salvador Island tonight to deal with the issue, but only if the swell has
disappeared. However, my expectation is that we will not find a suitable spot to
deal with the halliard until Miami. We have enough fuel to motor sail with jib
only all the way to Miami if need be with no adverse implication on our arrival
date.
