<DIV>
<DIV>Hello Everybody</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Since arriving in the Caribbean in December we have been to 7 different
countries and 24 different islands.We had lots of fun with Chloe and Ross and
sailed around Grenada and the Grenadine Islands where the snorkelling was
excellent. We saw hundreds of birds nesting on Tobago Cays, mostly brown noddys
but some terns. We have at last caught some good fish. We read that you have to
get a young female to spit on the lure to attract the fish. Chloe's spit
certainly worked as we caught a 10/12lb yellow fin tuna and another biggish fish
which we think was a spanish mackerel.They both tasted delicious.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>For the last week we have been preparing Namaste to be put to "bed" for the
hurricane season. Today she was lifted out and put in&nbsp; a huge cradle and
strapped to the ground. The sails, boom, spinnaker pole and canvas have all been
removed and inside has been washed with water and vinegar. We now have to climb
a ladder to get onboard. There are 3 other boats from Essex in the yard together
with many boats from different countries.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>We have really enjoyed cruising/exploring the Caribbean and look forward to
returning to Namaste in October. Meanwhile we have a short hoilday at Goslings
Farm before going to South America with Rob and Cat to ski, hike and
explore.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Hope everybody is well.</DIV></DIV>

<P>We have now been in Grenada for a few days and are as far south as we have
ever been. On the 328 mile sail south from Antigua the winds were in the right
direction but very gusty (34 at knots at times) with some roughish seas but we
made some really good speeds. Off Martinque we were surrounded by around 50
dolphins swimming around the bow. Between Carriacou and Grenada we saw several
huge turtles and passed some attractive islands with loads of birds (mainly
brown boobies). We sailed down the windward side of Grenada to avoid the
underwater volcano called Kick&#x2019;em Jenny and to get clear wind.</P>
<P>We have anchored in some lovely bays on the south coast and even had one
night in a very small marina which was a freebie from the ARC. It was a treat to
have electric lights and the marina staff were nearly a helpful as those at
Brightlingsea Harbour.</P>
<P>We have been into the rain forest twice using the local buses which are
cheap, efficient and great fun. There are some excellent hikes with breathtaking
views and loads of beautiful trees, plants and mona monkeys.</P>
<P>We are looking forward to Chloe and Ross joining us tomorrow for a couple of
weeks. </P>
<P>Hope all is well at home.</P>

<DIV>We arrived in Antigua on Monday&nbsp;16 March&nbsp;after a 47 mile tight on
the wind crossing from Guadeloupe. At present we are anchored off Jolly Harbour
in turquoise water overlooking the island of Montserrat. A pelican is diving for
fish.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>We really enjoyed Dominica, an island with super hiking. It was fun using
the local buses and when off the bus routes the locals would offer you a ride so
it was easy to get around.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>The anchorages off the west coast of Guadeloupe were not that good but we
did spend some time off Pigeon Island which is part of the Cousteau marine park.
Two huge turtles swam around the boat and the snorkelling was very clear and
deep with lots of big fish.</DIV></DIV>

<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Its very strange being on terra firma, the hustle

ocean.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Over the line, we were 82, out of 217 yachts.&nbsp;
We wil have to wait and see where the handicap places us overall.&nbsp; Some
yachts have motored a lot of the way which could help us...one yacht used 2,500
ltrs of fuel.&nbsp; Thats not sailing!!</FONT></DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>We were met on the quayside by Bridget, Jan and a
few other groupies.&nbsp; There was a guy playing his steel drums as we
gratefully received out welcome punches and fruit basket.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>We haven't yet managed to sort out shore power and
the battery is low so we need to keep this brief, but we will send photo's and a
more in depth summation in the next couple of days.</FONT></DIV>

<P>Hi All </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Our current DTW (distance to waypoint) is 62 nm! How I wish I was in a
car...less than an hour and I'd be in possession of the arrival bowl of fruit
and importantly rum punch! I'm trying to be patient, but I think I'm close to
driving Chloe insane. I have a lot of energy having been contained in a 46 by 14
ft yacht for the last 19 days. My sister will no doubt sympathise with Chloe.
Still, less than 9 hours and we should be there. Approx midnight our time, and
4am Saturday morning back at home.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial

<P>Winds have been kind for the past few days and we have hopes of catching a
couple of boats in our class that were just 1 and 5 miles ahead of us yesterday.
We have chased down a yacht and gone past her today - not sure what or who she
is but its still nice to be in front! If we do manage to overhaul the boats
closest to us then we have a shot at finishing in the top 5 over the line in our
class. Motoring penalties will then come into it and we think we will compare
favourably there.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial

<P>As we will be arriving late, we have decided to have a small on board party
and then get a good night's sleep before we spend the whole of Saturday carrying
on our arrival celebrations. We have beers and wine chilling in the fridge and
expect to have Jan (Caruthers&#x2019;s wife) and Bridget waiting on the pontoon to join
us.</FONT></FONT></P>

<P>Hi All </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>It has been a few days since I sent the halfway blog.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT
face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>We have indifferent winds since then, making good progress on a couple of
days and then having to motor quite a bit yesterday as there was just no wind at
all. Today has been the same - wind speeds of 3 - 6 knots.</FONT></FONT>
</P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>To alleviate the windless boredom we have taken to cracker eating contests on
an almost daily basis. There is something endlessly funny in watching Paul and
Jeremy scoffing as many crackers as possible in 3 minutes! If we ever run out of
crackers - which is doubtful - we might have to start a nut based game. We have
nuts galore on board.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial
size=2>
<P>Crackers aside, there were two big positives from yesterday. The first came
in the form of a big squall. It gave us the chance to replenish fresh water for
washing. Positioning buckets around the bimini (basically a secured parasol)
means that within 5 mins you easily have enough water for 6 people to wash. I
went onto the foredeck to lather up but typically, the rain stopped before I
could rinse off.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial
size=2>
<P>The second is that we have now dipped under 1,000 miles to go. We had a small
party on deck to celebrate the fact. At our current rate we will be partying
every time we notch another 50 miles! </P>
<P>Over the last few days we have been in the company of some other yachts on
the ARC. None of us have enough wind to get away from one another and have just
been hovering on each others horizons. This will probably continue until the
winds pick up.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial
size=2>
<P>Night watches have turned into dusk watches, as providing there isn&#x2019;t too
much cloud, the moon which is only 1/2 full provides a lot of light. We hope to
arrive in St Lucia just before the full moon.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial
size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Hope everyone is well.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT

        Update from windless Namaste

<DIV><SPAN lang=EN-GB>
<P>Hi All </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>We have been enduring a period of slack to non existent winds for the past
24/36 hours. We are managing to convert what we wind we do have into reasonable
progress at times, but this progress is invariably halted by a drop in the
wind.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Everyone on board is tired due to the slow rocking motion that is almost
hypnotic. Its strange too, that bobbing in one spot for any length of time is in
a way an unsettling experience. I guess party due to the thought of boats
catching us or pulling away from us and party as it puts into perspective what a
vast expanse of ocean we are in, and with no wind we could be here for quite
sometime!</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>As I type, we seem to have come completely to a standstill. There is a dark
cloud hovering to port - at least if we have a squall pass over I might get a
shower!</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Today has been the 1st day for 3-4 days that we have seen another vessel. A
large cargo ship that passed 3 nm ahead of us bound for Norway - motoring along
at 12 knots - how we would love for some wind to give us that sort of
speed!</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>We are eagerly anticipating the position update from the ARC at 19.00 tonight
so that we can see who else has been struck by this lack of wind. Hopefully we
are not the only ones! By our reckoning, we are actually in a better position
than most, but weather forecasts have been famously wrong in the
past!</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>In our becalmed state, we have taken to reading, sleeping and listening to
music.&nbsp; </FONT></FONT><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>I'm
off outside to do my best impression of a vacuum cleaner...we have got to get
wind from somewhere. I'll let you know how I get on.</FONT></FONT></P><FONT

        Blog 4 or 5?!

<table width="100%"><tr><td bgcolor="#ffffff" style="background-color: #ffffff; ">

<DIV><SPAN lang=EN-GB>
<P>Good morning all </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>We are fast approaching the completion of our 8th full day at sea. We had a
very calm night, but still managed to creep along at 5.5 - 6 knots. Not the
speeds that we are hoping for, but it has given everyone the chance to rest
up.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>From the daily distance figures we have been getting, we have been among the
pace setters in the C division for a number of days and by our estimate we are
5th, in terms of least distance from St Lucia. We are also the farthest south in
the division, so hope to make up some more ground.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT
face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>We caught our 2nd fish yesterday. It was a case of 3rd time lucky before we
landed it. I had three bites in quick succession, but the first two manage to
escape just short of the boat - I had been fighting with them for 80 odd metres
by that point, so pretty frustrating! We have had one flying fish land on the
boat, and one that stuck Paul in the back on a night watch (not sure if I have
already told you that). Its amazing how far they go out of the water, and how
fast. Occasionally you get a flurry of activity when there are literally
hundreds of them skipping over the surface.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial
size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Temperatures have gone up a notch in the last couple of days. Its continually
no less than 25*C in the saloon, even at night. During the day yesterday we were
up at 32*C. Right now, at 08.36 it is 28.6*C outside. While that all sounds very
nice, it does have its draw backs - there is limited water with which to shower,
and no escape from the heat, even just for a few minutes. I have had quite a few
sleepless nights as a consequence.</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial
size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>I had a real giggle yesterday, when over lunch we were talking about our
arrival and cooling dips in the Caribbean sea. Jeremy's admission, given the mid
Atlantic surroundings, that he 'hates salt water' set me off.</FONT></FONT>
</P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Breakfast is about to be served - its a meat eating day so sausages, bacon
and eggs! The vegetables on board have already eaten their muesli.</FONT></FONT>
</P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<P>Hope everyone is well and you have remembered to open the first day on the
advent calendar!</FONT></FONT> </P><FONT face=Arial size=2><FONT face=Arial

school wins!</FONT></FONT></SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Hi All</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><STRONG><U>Strategy
overview:</U></STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>We sailed south to pick up the trade winds and as
the nautical saying goes 'once&nbsp;your&nbsp;butter starts to melt, turn and
head west.'&nbsp; We did this north of cape Verde Islands. The trade winds are
established and we are romping towards St Lucia at 7-8 knots, occasionally 9.
</FONT>
<P><FONT size=2><FONT face=Arial>We&nbsp;think our strategy is paying off as all
of the northerly boats are encountering squalls and bad winds, some head
winds.</FONT><FONT face=Arial> </FONT></FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=2><FONT face=Arial>In terms of postioning, when you look at the
fleet we are all handicapped. Namaste is 60th overall rating of the cruisers and
a head of us (in rating) are 30 class A boats, 20 class B boats, 5 invitation
boats and 24 ARC racers. Our over all position should be approx 130 on handicap.
There are further penalties for running under engine, we have heard many have,
but we have not.</FONT><FONT face=Arial> </FONT></FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Arial size=2>The next 48 hours should show the benefits of heading
south.&nbsp; All positions you are seeing are distance from St Lucia, but we
added 150 miles by choice to pick up better trade winds and ocean currents.
Comparing daily distance&nbsp;is perhaps a better&nbsp;measure of our success or
failure.&nbsp; <SPAN lang=EN-GB></P>
<P>In effect, until now we have gone south, only going west slightly. If our
theory is correct, we should start to make up ground. But considering our
rightful handicap position of 130, and the fact that we have only just turned to
head towards St Lucia, we are happy with our most recent position of 100...for
now...we hope to finish as high as possible!</P><B><U>
<P>General boat life waffle:</P></B></U>
<P>Lunches and dinners have continued in their excellent vein. Our cheese has
started mature nicely - some rather too nicely! Our fresh supplies are now
staring to dwindle slightly, save for potatoes, those green tomatoes, which are
now red and have been fantastic from day 1, and bananas. We have a lot of tinned
food on board so there is no danger of us going hungry. We might also start to
fish again soon...since Chloe lost a biggy a day or two ago we haven't bothered
as we don&#x2019;t want to create anymore drag than is needed! We didn't actually see
the fish that got away, but it had pulled the lure clean off the line...our
rubbish knots you might think, but it was the guy at the fish shop who set up
the rig so we are assuming it was a vicious beast that is better off down
below.</P>
<P>We had an uneventful night for the 1st time last night, the spinnaker flew
all night with no problems meaning that we all got a good night's sleep. (our
distance log for the last three days has been 155 nm, 178 nm &amp; 170 nm). We
are striving for a string of 200 nm days that will really give us a boost.</P>
<P>Finally I am going to leave you with a line from a book that I'm reading;
Pedalling to Hawaii by Stevie Smith. I really like it, and think its going to be
my New Year's resolution to be true to it...basically what I'm saying is that I
might have to get involved in another adventure next year!! Will and I have
discussed the prospect of rowing from La Gomera to English Harbour in
Antigua.</P><I>
<P>Whatever you can do, or dream that you can do, begin it. Boldness has power,
energy and magic within it.</P></I>
<P>Lots of Love</P>
<P>Namaste.</P>
<P>P.S</P>
<P>I understand that our latest position is not showing on the google image of
our blog.&nbsp; I'm hoping to get this sorted soon.&nbsp; Right now we are
slightly north and west of Cape Verde Islands.&nbsp; (17;&nbsp;31.288 N &amp;
26; 25.046 W)</P></SPAN><FONT size=2><SPAN

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>The
final pre-race update from Namaste; the ARC start is now less than 24 hours
away!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>We
have taken delivery of our fruit and vegetable order, some 40 Onions, 60 each of
Apples, Oranges &amp; Bananas and 100 large green tomatoes.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The lady in the shop smiled sweetly and
told Peter that you can eat them green.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;
</SPAN>Peter was sold immediately, but time will tell! It&#x2019;s now just a case of
tidying up and finding homes for the fruit and vegetable.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Every last nook and cranny has been
filled.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>We
also received a Basil plant... Will has been charged with keeping it alive for
the duration of the trip.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;
</SPAN>Apparently, there are a few boats who are attempting to do the same; the
best looking plant in St Lucia wins a prize.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp; </SPAN>What exactly constitutes a good
looking Basil plant?!<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Sadly I think
our plant could be used to provide the definition of &#x2018;the ugliest Basil plant&#x2019; &#x2013;
Will has his work cut out!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>Will,
Chloe and I have been under the boat scrubbing away at the hull.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The copper bottom has helped to keep the
growth down, but as speed is of the essence we felt it worth the
effort.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri
size=3>Yesterday Skippy took us through the safety brief.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>It was all going very well, all flares
present and correct, the MOB procedures have been discussed and jobs allocated,
Chloe is boat medic and Jeremy is in charge of daily rig checks.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>Midway
through the briefing, Paul was demonstrating the deployment of the rescue
ladder:</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>&#x2018;The
best way to deploy this is by SECURING the fastenings back on to one another and
then dropping the end into the water.&#x2019; </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri
size=3>SPLASH!!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>&#x2018;Oh
b*ll*cks...it helps if you fix it together properly!&#x2019;</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>In the
evening, we all went out to the final ARC party...free wine and beer all night
ended with Paul having his first late night kebab!<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>There&#x2019;s a chance it might not be his
last as to Paul&#x2019;s surprise he enjoyed it!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>Will
and I agreed to be the &#x2018;foredeck team&#x2019; for the duration of the crossing.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Basically, anytime Peter hollers &#x2018;hit
the foredeck&#x2019;, Will and I will spring out on deck and alter the
foresails.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>The
yachting jacket got its first official outing too and caused quite a stir (for
those who haven&#x2019;t seen the yachting jacket, it is a blue and white, vertically
striped Jaeger blazer &#x2013; it oozes class, sophistication and wealth &#x2013; rather like
its owner!).<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Peter has got his eye
on it already.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Depending on how
often he demands that Will &amp; I &#x2018;hit the foredecks&#x2019; he might earn a loan of
it for the St Lucian arrival celebrations.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><FONT face=Calibri size=3>We
will send our next update from the Ocean!</FONT></P>

for now</FONT></P>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Welcome to our first load of b*ll*cks...I mean
blog!</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>There are now just 18 days until we set sail...and
in another 18 days we just might be nearing our destination!&nbsp; Exciting as
that thought is, it puts into perspective just how much we still have to do,
despite the fact that Bridget and Paul have already spent quite some time
organising and provisioning Namaste.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Bridget, Paul, Peter &amp; Jeremy are all flying
out to the boat in Las Palmas on 10th November.&nbsp; Will is then due out a few
days later.&nbsp; Chloe &amp; I (Ross - Namaste's chief blogger) will then be
the last to join up with the team on the 21st, just two days before we set
off.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>In advance of the start date we still need to
perform a number of last minute chores.&nbsp; The fresh fruit and vegetable shop
for the voyage will be the last thing we do, but equally one of the most
important as the boat will be vegetarian save for bacon on Sunday mornings for
myself, Peter and Will.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>All being well we will send an update just prior to
leaving and we will then be updating on a fairly regular basis throughout the
trip (weather, sea sickness and IT permitting!).</FONT></DIV>
