Zahara and I safely arrived in Baionna after a tiring but uneventful 24 hr sail from Corunna. It has to be one of the most inhospitable bits of coastline, very rugged and with few places to run into if the weather deteriorates (which it often does!). Corunna was difficult to leave but with four days of fog offshore (and no radar), to stay was not a difficult decision to make. However, I had to be in (or near) Porto by Saturday so I left Friday morning in fine and clear weather but with little in the way of a breeze. It was really a case of just getting 'round the corner' (120nm) so I was happy to make progress under engine.
It turned out to be a fairly special night with all the various onshore lights and lighthouses clearly visible, wall to wall stars and Dolphins playing around the boat for around 4 hours. With bioluminescence (small micro organisms that emit light when agitated), it was mesmerising to watch the Dolphins glowing as they sped around the boat. In fact it was quite unnerving at times as they approached, looking more like the torpedoes from some old Jack Hawkins film!
Still, sailing alone is very tiring and I was glad to arrive here in Baionna in one piece. This is a very attractive place with some wonderful sailing. I should be here for a few days but hope to go on anchor for a couple of nights in the Islas de Ceis, just a few miles from here. Maybe even get a swim at last! I had forgotten how much I like the Spanish way of life.... perhaps one day.....
