Portabelo is a former Spanish stronghold but sadly, only rundown remnants of the old fortifications remain.  Portabelo itself is pretty seedy.  The town is dirty with fairly ramshackle houses and rubbish piled up in every open space.  We took a walk one afternoon and passed the rubbish dump (well, where everyone tends to dump rubbish...not an official dump) to see vultures perched on dog carcasses.  It wasn’t a place that we warmed to.  But the anchorage was safe and we picked up free wifi on board. We learnt to listen for the fruit and vege man on his loudspeaker and managed to indulge in a fantastic array of freshly grown produce including broccoli – a real treat.
