The pilot charts show an average of nine calm days in this part of the Indian Ocean in April. As there had already been seven calm days I felt happy about heading off. After three days the wind died and so we have had eight days of calms. On one noon to noon run we only made 36 miles. So much for averages!

Some of the ships come far too close but at least their presence keeps the fishing boats away. Ships are more predictable even if they are sometime thoughtless. Whereas fishing boats are always thoughtless. The variety of ships is immense. Many, I have no idea what they are. But there are many; sometimes as many as 20 showing on AIS.

I bake bread, oatcakes and make humus. I do all the sailing and navigating. Gina does everything else. The fresh vegetables, fruit and eggs are finished. There never was any meat.

At the time of writing we are going through Great Channel, north of Sumatera, south of the Nicobars. 325 nautical miles to go to Langkawi. The wind is still light but the east going current is gaining strength which is a help. On the other side of the channel in the Straits of Malacca the current will disappear but, hopefully, there will be more wind.

Hopefully…
