Before departure from Reunion one absolutely essential task had to be undertaken. Here is your correspondent hard at work in the galley of VS (not a common sight), making his own ice-cream. Having given up sugar normal commercial ice-cream is off limits (except when I weaken). So homemade is the order of the day. In my ignorance I had not realised that it is really just cold egg custard. Instead of sugar one uses glucose syrup and dextrose powder. It makes lovely ice-cream, and three litres of the stuff turns out to be just enough for a ten day trip (the other half of the crew having initially turned up her nose at the stuff sadly decided that she rather liked it).

And here we are at sea in lovely conditions flying both foresails in proper cutter fashion. This requires a nice beam wind or a close reach - conditions almost unheard of for VS.

And below, South Africa in sight after quite a challenging trip, racing to beat the southerly buster into Richard’s Bay

We made it. But little did we know what the next buster had in store for us a week later, supposedly safe in port.
