It's nearly December and the Christmas musak has started

It could be worse, it only started the beginning of this week and there is some cause for amusement despite the relentless aural assault of possibly pirated bonhommie.

I've been told that Christmas day is not a public holiday in Malaysia but that hasn't stopped the restaurants in the marina going all festive. The seafood joint has their staff wearing red Santa hats which is fine but it's a little incongruous to see the Malay girls wearing their black uniform headscarves with a red hat perched on top. If the idea of the scarf is to hide the hair from male eyes then surely the Santa hat would do the same job? Never mind the red and black make an attractive contrast, even if the result is a slightly 'Cardinal look', Think Sweet and sour Sea Bass served by the Spanish Inquisition. Two number seventeens and a comfy chair.

Fortunately because of religious sensitivities we're not being subjected to Christmas Carols but unfortunately that means I get blasted by Perry Como and Bing, or should that be Singh, Crosby saccharine sound-alikes when I go up for the occasional happy hour. Not to worry, my batch of home-hooch is coming on well. 25 litres of grapefruit wine. Everybody has heard of the grapefruit diet of course and as they were on a special in the supermarket I thought I'd go on a diet (yeah, right!). I think of it as the healthy option but what my liver will make of it is another thing entirely. The brew has only been festering since Tuesday but it smells pretty good and is bubbling merrily most of the time. I rate its chances of remaining unsampled this weekend as zero.

For those readers who were in the marina earlier this month, work on 'the beach' has accelerated and it really is a beach now and only lacks somebody renting-out deckchairs. The large dredgers now come extremely close to the outside marina pontoons and dump tons of er. dredged stuff onto the beach and the excavators are busy spreading it. Work on the flats (apartments) has also continued apace although there was a rumour that two floors had collapsed in the building. Not good for sales but the activity hasn't ceased. It's now definitely hazardous to walk through the building site.

No news on the engine front which of course means no money spent which is a good thing. The weather remains a little unsettled so I'm happy to be here for a couple of weeks more. I'm averaging a chapter a day on the new Karno book, unless I'm writing a blog article.

All in all, apart from a lack of glue for the dingy, things are quite pleasant and relaxed.
