Had a last minute check at 1730 and we'd moved a bit. Depth read 53 metres. Hmm, I put 25 metres of chain out. Yup, it was hanging straight down! Well at least I've proved to myself I can lift a 25kg anchor and 25 metres of 8mm chain in a straight lift.

I also proved that the engine can deliver 'quite high revs' when required. Running out of daylight I made for the anchorage but about 1nm short I was running out of daylight fast. There is a small fishing harbour with quite large fishing boats in it so I pulled in there and dropped the hook in 3mtrs. Again 25 metres of chain and I paid the chain out slowly, checking that the anchor was hoiding. It was but is now grumbling a bit, as am I. I have very good, close transits so we'll see. If this fails then it's up with the gennaker and out to sea.

Just before light faded I checked the bottom (not mine, the sea-bed). Rock and sand. Hey hp, guess who's on anchor watch tonight.
