Today the crew of Titania had a Blue Planet experience.
We rescued a turtle that had become caught in a debris fishing net
drifting in the middle of the Atlantic - and in the process pretty
much faultlessly executed a man overboard
drill.
We we running at around 10 knots in mid-Atlantic with
our headsail goose-winged out, when Todd noticed a debris fishing net. As we
passed it, we saw that there was a turtle caught in the net. Our practiced
man over board drill kicked into action: MOB button pushed; headsail furled
away; engine started; mainsail winched in; and we beat back along our track. We
grabbed the fishing net with a boat hook and pulled it and the turtle on
board. We were able to cut the turtle free of the net.
It seems incredible now, but at the time the turtle
seemed totally conscious that we were rescuing it. It looked deeply at us,

thought we saw it waving its flipper in thanks.
