On the 11th June we lifted our anchor from Liscia bay to head into Maddalena to shelter from some stronger winds which were forecast.

We stayed for 5 nights glad to be safely tucked into the Marina whilst some stronger winds went through the area.

When Tioram is tied to the dock, Tony and I rarely miss the opportunity to hire a motorbike to go exploring. So we headed off to the island of Caprera visiting more of the bay's we haven't visited by boat, enjoying the stunning interior landscape and made a visit to Forte Arbuticci perched high on the hills of Caprera.

Historically linked to Garibaldi the fort was once again put into action during the Second World War, a strategic position looking out over the Straits of Bonifacio.  Now it houses an interactive display charting the life's work and achievements of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of two worlds and an Italian icon. The views from the fort are spectacular.

We explored the Island of Maddalena a little more, again finding wonderful vantage points to see over the Archipelago. We stumbled on a small church and went inside. Locals told us later that it was historically the first church on La Maddalena, the walls are covered with icons, donations and offerings, photos often attached of loved ones etc.

These places are always very interesting to see as to me it feels like something from another time, another age, almost pagan- like and not like the 21st century.
