Hi all,

On 22nd July several superyachts came into Sami harbour, more than we have seen before including a superb 100ft sailing yacht.

By the afternoon the quay was unusually full of superyachts. A 35 metre motoryacht called Tilon 2 arrived, turned in the small harbour and tried to moor on the remaining blown on hammerhead quay.

The wind caught him and he drifted onto a 90 degree corner, fenders squeezing and one enormous ball fender burst. The crew using radios spoke to the skipper who could not see the dock from the lovely large upper deck. He backed off and re moored with Tony and I helping with lines to get him tied up quickly. The 220 ton motoryacht squeezed down on the fenders against the dock with a substantial wind blowing him onto it.

We were very relieved to see this beautiful yacht get moored safely. We were close at hand to help as we were the next yacht to it but on the other side of the concrete hammerhead.

The owner and skipper, called Peter, thanked us for our help and kindly invited us for a drink on board. We politely declined, but later that evening he asked again so we went on board.

On the top deck he entertained us with his friends and crew. The large deck area had a bar, seating, splash pool and fantastic panoramic views from the elevated position. The helm position was also very interesting with infra-red night vision cameras and state of the art nav instruments. He kindly showed us his state room cabin and wonderful huge lounge.

Peter, now 69 told us that he had been sailing around the Ionian Islands for 20 years, seeing a lot of changes. Tilon 2 is his 11th motoryacht and he remarked that his first boat would have fitted into the beam (width) of Tilon 2  …..   7.5 metres.

He said that the Ionian was changing with more and more celebrities sailing on yachts in the area, as yet….. free from paparazzi.  In Corfu he had anchored alongside a beautiful anonymous yacht, only to discover it was owned by Armani the fashion designer. His granddaughter was invited on board to meet the fashion ‘oracle’.

It was clear to see just how much pleasure Peter got from his beautiful yacht, especially sharing it with his family. He still enjoys the challenges of working and especially helming his own superyacht.

We thanked him for his hospitality.

The next morning a huge super motoryacht, approx. 200 ft. anchored in Sami bay…… far too big for the small harbour.  The celebrities have certainly arrived this year.

Tony recognised the yacht as possibly being the Philippe Stark designed yacht built for Steve Jobs of Apple. Sadly completed after Steve Jobs died.

The photo of the designer yacht at anchor shows a 57 ft. benneteau yacht  moving alongside it. The blue dot of the yacht gives you the sense of scale of the enormous yacht at anchor.
