Hi everyone,

Leaving the boat in a morning in Sami harbour involves passing other yachts along the quay, all from different countries.  The usual ‘morning’ greeting turns into bon giorno, Guten morgan, bonjour, yassas before we get to the guys on the fishing boat who are Egyptian…… we haven’t worked out good morning yet in their language.

The mornings in Sami town are like any Mediterranean village. Unlike in the busy Uk where we rush to work, plan our evening meal in the car on the way home, stopping off at the large busy supermarket to quickly buy some food. No in Greece and in Sami town nothing moves that quickly.

Whether it’s the heat or the culture, they are doing something right.

It’s very much the story of ‘butcher, baker, candlestick maker’.  Ladies with small children wonder from shop to shop choosing their fruit and veg. Old ladies carry baskets of bread and groceries.

Elderly gentlemen cycle by with crates fixed to the back wheel…. the crates full of long baguettes, lettuces, household appliances and sometimes dogs.

Picture a man I sadly didn’t manage to photograph. An elderly man, with a long white beard, huge handlebar moustache, a partly broken raffia style brimmed hat, a vibrant purple shirt and a crate full of the daily purchases, did he realise he looked wonderful ?? The 1930’s black painted cycle the same age as the man…… or perhaps as Andreas would say….. from before ‘Hessus’ (see Andreas the mechanic blog).

Other people come and go on new and very old scooters, probably kept going by Andreas.

The centre of this activity is focussed on the bakery. Everyone knows one another; it’s a meeting place for old and young to debate the day.  People who are not working chat for ages with bread in hand others zoom quickly to the door step on scooters, jump off, shout ‘Ti Kanis’ how are you… or yassas,’hello’, have a quick chat, buy there breakfast pastry and coffee and off they go on their scooter, no helmets in the sunshine.

The wonderful ‘patisserie’ is called Spathis. Greek pastries are to die for and this patisserie makes the Greek delicacy of Baklava---- layers of fine pastry layered together with pistachios, cinnamon, spices and the all important ingredient…….lots and lots of natural honey…..mmmmh!

They also make cakes, all types of bread and chocolates… and to go with it…. Freddo Cappuccinos an ice cold espresso coffee prepared then poured on ice with very cold frothed milk poured on top, a cinnamon sprinkle and a straw added…… all served by a lovely young lady called Angelica.  Locals sip these for at least an hour. We find them too delicious to wait for the ice to melt.

The patisserie itself is a visual feast….. enjoy the photos.
