On 4th June at 13.30 hrs we left Levkas marina to motor south through the
very narrow Levkas canal which divides Levkas from the mainland. For more
info and history of the canal please see previous Levkas canal blogs
2011/12.

We trickled south with the genoa sail only in light winds of 5-8 knots true,
passing Ligia on Levkas and the famous privateisland of Skorpios......owned
by the Onassis family and in the past by Aristotle Onassis and Jackie
Kennedy Onassis.

We sailed past Nidri town past and Tranquil bay and motored into a large
area of inland sea which feels like a lake and is called Vlikho.

We dropped anchor at 16.00 hrs to free swing, always a pleasure as there are
very few places in the Ionian which are shallow enough to just simply drop
the anchor.
The anchorages are beautiful but deep and require a little extra effort to
add lines to the shore.

Shortly after anchoring a boat called PJ came in and anchored nearby. It was
quite a coincidence as the first time we ever saw PJ we had recently sailed
from the UK and were anchored in La Azohia bay near Mazarron, Spain.
We we flying the ARC Atlantic crossing 2009 flag and they had just arrived
from Greece heading west to the Canary Islands.
We saw them again in Gran canaria and then after the Atlantic crossing in St
Lucia and later in several Caribbean islands.
The last time we heard of them was on the VHF radio. We were about 80 miles
off Bermuda having left Antigua to sail east across the Atlantic via the
Azores to the Med. We heard the strong signal of Bermuda radio calling Yacht
PJ into the Island as we continued on our voyage to the Azores. It was the
last contact we had as yachts go on their different journeys...not expecting
to cross headings again.
So since then we have sailed to Portugal,Spain, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta,
Greece the Ionian, the Aegean, Turkey, back all through the Med to Spain.
Then east again to Greece last year and again this year. PJ returned through
the Med to Corfu, Greece after their Atlantic crossing.
And so the saying .... Of all the bars in all the world..... a la the film
Casablanca....it was a case of...Of all the bays in all the world.....two
boats happen to sail into the same bay on the same day.

As you can imagine there was a lot a catching up to do...., the usual
sailing stories of the Atlantic..... a pleasant evening and a bottle of wine
shared between 'sea farers'. No doubt the same kind of meeting as has been
between sea farers for centuries.

Love to all
