We've made it to Lisbon!

A very dramatic entrance to Lisbon via the Rio Tejo under the enormous Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge, heavy with traffic and trains.

The Torre de Belem, a fairy tale building on the left with countless other monuments, museums and carvings visible all the way up the River. Once under the bridge we found the Alcantara Marina tucked in behind a container port and the roar of the bridge overhead became slightly more distant. We can see planes coming into land, their final approach is above us, the airport isn't far.

The welcome was very friendly and the children were given 'Porto de Lisboa' baseball caps when we checked into the Marina. It was 5pm so we headed into the city by tram which was packed and hot but took us to the centre. There we took a bus up the steep hill to the Castelo de Sao Jorge and found a beautiful view over to the River. By now it was dark but we could see for miles all round including up to the Vasca de Gama bridge further up river.

As we waited for our return tram, we received a history lesson from a Portuguese gentleman who was delighted to hear how much we are enjoying Portugal!
