It was another early start today as I walked out to Sword beach to be there at 7.45 (which is when I believe my father arrived at H hour +71 years). It was a beautiful sunny morning with a gentle breeze and hardly anyone about as I sat on one of the old bunkers that is now covered in sand.

I had the Commando memorial entirely to myself and looking out across the vast expanse of beach I thought about my dad who only occasionally talked about what he had done here. Jojo and the children joined me a little later and we had a breakfast picnic looking down on to the sands.

At ten about a thousand people arrived with a detachment of French Commando's, Navy personnel plus a band who had come to honour the sacrifices made by the Commando's on this beach and remember the invasion.
Following this ceremony wreaths were laid at a second memorial near the ferry terminal to all the Royal Marine Commando's who had taken part in the hostilities. It is nice to see that people still understand how important it was that men like my father achieved something incredible on this beach, then those that survived followed it all the way through to Germany.
