We caught the 10.15 bus from the port in Ouisterham and headed to Caen and the Memorial Museum. The model aircraft we have been building were brought to life by a full size Typhoon fighter bomber hanging just over our heads inside the entrance. The exhibits were beautifully laid out and led through from the development of the problems in Europe after the First World War through to the Cold War.

A highlight of the visit was a short film which used a split screen to show both the Allies building up to D Day and at the same time the Germans building their defences, plus film of them defending the coastline whist the Allies attacked. It was a powerful piece of footage seeing thousands of troops running across the beaches and ended by fading to the same beaches as they are today.

By the time we had made our way around the exhibits we were all feeling rather sombre and relieved to get out into the sunshine and walk around the American and Canadian Memorial Gardens. The American garden is particularly impressive, as it has a waterfall that you can walk under and a peaceful hollow that surrounds a pond.

Once back on TC we relaxed sitting in the cockpit enjoying the evening sunshine in a very protected marina surrounded by poplar trees. It is located alongside the canal to Caen and this evening we were amazed to see the masts of 'Sea Cloud' (a 117m three masted sailing passenger ship) towering over the trees as it made its way past just yards the other side of the trees to Caen.
