Victoria Marina, St Peter Port, Guernsey

A grey and wet morning which was spent hunkered down below, Harry is now the proud owner of a De Havilland Vampire T.11 airfix model, there is a fine selection accumulating in his forepeak bunk.

As it was a wild and windy afternoon we felt it an appropriate opportunity to visit Cornet Castle at the entrance to St Peter Port harbour. It is a beautifully restored 800 year old castle with 5 museums and a fine number of walkways around the outside. Amongst other items of interest was the story of the discovery of a 1,700 year old Roman wreck which hit rocks at the entrance to the harbour around 286 AD. In 1984 they brought up the ancient timbers and the Guernsey Maritime Trust is now working towards a slow and steady restoration.

In Almanacs and Pilot books much is made of spring tides around the Channel Islands so Bol and I took a moment to walk out to the entrance at both spring low and later at spring high, there is an incredible drop of 30+ft drop and it is pretty awe inspiring to consider the vast movement of water in these areas. With a good force six blowing out in the straits, it was a comfortable feeling to have Thursday's Child securely tied up in the marina.
