Alvor

We had a very relaxed start to the day (including a swim for some more noble folk) and left Portimao around 10am, half way between low and high tide as we wanted to enter into Alvor Harbour with a flood tide. Last time we came in here we hit the bottom, it was easier this time as we could follow our track from before on the computer, but we still got down to 10cm under the keel which was pretty nerve racking.

The anchorage here in Alvor is lovely, we have wildlife all around and at low water the sandbanks rise on both sides. The town has much charm and we had a walk along their board walk which runs through a nature reserve. At the far end we discovered a beach used by kite-surfers who were skimming across the harbour as the tide dropped rapidly. Occasionally, they would fall off and stand up in the middle of the harbour with water only just above their ankles.

After an early supper the children were dropped on the nearest sandbank where they ran for about twenty minutes exploring the vast exposed expanse until it was almost dark.

Back to the boat and just time for a story before bed (currently, 'We didn't mean to go to sea').
