An interesting end to a challenging passage. At
0240 this morning motor sailing with a small amount of headsail out in a black
night with rain, 3m seas and ESE winds varying from 11 - 25 knots the port aft
lower decided to give up. At this stage we were asking some serious questions
about the fittings supplied by East marine Phuket when we were re rigged 18
months ago. So the headsail came in and we reverted to reefed staysail with
enough engine revs to take some weight off the rig in the rolly seas. By 800
the seas were steep and up to 4m with breaking tops one of which
broke over Fi and completely filled the cockpit - only the second time that's
happened in 12 years cruising - she was not impressed. All good things come to
an end of course and by 1030 we were tied up alongside in Port Mathurin
Rodrigues with the major Indian Ocean crossing behinds us and only another 300nm
to go to Mauritius. Checking in was very casual with only 18 forms to be
completed - no problem, especiall after a few beers. All well on
board.
