So we finally arrived in the west fjords yesterday at 2100 after a long 62 nm sail around the Hornstrandir. We had a mixture of sailing and motoring with wind speeds varying from 5 - 20+ knots and currents variously with us at 1 knot and against us at 3 knots on headlands with some awkward confused seas. The air was cold and sky remained overcast at best with fog and rain at times – typical Iceland conditions. The anchorage in the NE corner of Aoalvik bay was calm and infinitely peaceful. One small fishing boat rode at anchor and a few back packers on shore tried to light a driftwood fire on the beach in the rain – and succeeded. The beach is wide and sandy with snow covered slopes behind rising to mist covered stratified hills rising to a little over 500m. This morning is partly sunny and there is a prospect of a walk ashore to check out the bird life and the snow.
