After an over night passage of mixed motoring and light wind sailing we arrived off Arnesey island at around 0730 this morning under a grey dawn, cold with stark mountains rising from a dark sea. The water was smooth and rafts of sea birds - puffins, guillemots and fulmars – drifted around and dived as we approached. A mile offshore the bottom came up to 30m and we stopped for a spot of fishing. As soon as the weighted hooks hit bottom the rod bent and we hauled up our first haddock. – 30 minutes later we had 5 – enough. The anchorage was in a pool behind an islet covered in scarecrows, an arctic tern colony and itinerant geese. Fur seals littered the rocks and came to investigate as we anchored. All very peaceful and serene. We wandered ashore and Flynn set off on a local hill walk – from which he just returned. Lots of photos and good food. NW Iceland – what we came for.
