Subject: Spare portable pump for emergencies

It is a sad state of affairs in the modern world that the price of spare parts to repair equipment costs much more than buying a whole new unit!  This was the case with Whale or
Hendersons pumps.  Whale were a good small British firm who no doubt were taken over at some time by Hendersons.  The result was that to buy the service parts required to repair the old bilge pump in Celtic Dawn would have cost £33 for the outer deck cover, £32 for the inner rubber membrane service kit and £55 for a new metal arm assembly giving a total of £120.  But at the Marine Superstore in Portsmouth David was able to buy a new replacement pump for £69 so this is what he did.  Having now fitted the new pump David has mounted the old one on a kplywood base and added two short hoses so he now has an emergency portable pump in case of flooding at sea and a source of spares for the other two similar pumps onboard.  So some good has come from overinflated spare prices!
