We are back in Manitsoq to check out of Greenland as our next stop hopefully is Baffin Island at the southern tip. You have seen pictures of the town before so here are some that Trish has taken to show that Greenland really is green.
FAREWELL TO GREENLAND:
We have had a month in Greenland and after reaching almost 71 deg. N we are now heading into Manitsoq at 68.20 degN to fuel up and head over to S.E Baffin Island or Northern Labrador ( =or- 400NM). The last few days have been in Hamborgersund - a fantastic fjord with steep ragged mountains and Glaciers. We had two nights in one anchorage and Dave and I got to do a couple of long hikes ashore where we found an Arctic Fox and also and Arctic Hare - a thrill considering how little wildlife one sees in Greenland - it all gets shot!!!! Our hope to see Musk Ox have not eventuated other than the severed woolly head of the occassional one drying in front of a house. Last night we anchored in front of a Glacier up Semilinguaq Fjord. Being upfront with “fresh moraines on the face of a receding glacier was quite spectacular. The 7mile journey into the fjord to the glacier in misty drizzly conditions was a thrill as we passed several Kittiwake colonies shared with Guillemots and Icelandic Gulls. Today in clear sunshine we motored out of the sound passing close by the colonies and then in calm seas hung out by a Humpback Whale calmly feeding near us. My big thrill in Greenland have been the exquisite varied Arctic plants and flowers. The contrast between these bright tiny jewels against the huge massive icebergs in incredible. What a thrill its been to be here - a land far more populated than I expected and scenery way beyond my expectations. Now West for NE Canada ( about 400 NM) and hopefully Polar Bears and Caribou. Only problem with the Bears is that we wont be able to go roaming ashore. So my photos show - A typical wooden fishing boat still in use with the whale harpoon on the bow!!. The head of a Musk OX. Typical Grennland village scene, Vies from and in the mountains and the flowers and of course an iceberg.
