Yesterday morning we awoke to the sound of the wind still howling in the rigging so no one was in a special hurry to get up and be on our way.  After checking the forecast a plan was agreed upon, we would wait for the winds to ease a little and sail in the late afternoon, which should have us in the vicinity of Twillingate sometime on Sunday morning.  We had decided on Twillingate because there had been recent reports of icebergs in that area, unfortunately it seems the gale has blown them all away.  The wind died overnight and now we are motoring in a light drizzle and our ETA at Twillingate is …. well if some wind comes, who knows?  The best laid plans etc.

The good news is that in listening to the ice report this morning we are now officially inside the eastern limit of iceberg territory and there are estimated to be between 25 and 50 icebergs on the northeast coast of Newfoundland, their density increasing as we get further north and west.

Caught a glimpse of a whale this morning, plus we have enjoyed watching the antics of a little black bird, which can’t seem to make up its mind as to whether it wants to fly or make like a penguin.  As we approach them while they are resting on the surface, they attempt to take off in a flurry of furious flapping and then, more often then not, simply disappear by diving beneath the surface.  Looking up my book of seabirds I think they are Black Guillemots.

Max made pancakes for breakfast – perfect!
