We are back at Fukuoka but regrettably not without serious mishap. Early this morning we were run down by a large merchant ship. We survived but with considerable damage. The recently repaired wind vane is destroyed. The transom is severely damaged. A large amount of water made its way below and damaged most of Sylph's electronic equipment. But it could have been worse. Sylph remained afloat, neither RC nor I were injured, and the damage to Sylph is isolated to the stern area.

I will not go into details now as I have to send this email via someone else's internet connection, as both the satellite phone and the mobile broadband device no longer work due to water damage. Nonetheless, I want to get this message away to let everyone know that Sylph and her crew are OK. This is definitely a major setback in my plans, but in writing this short blog entry, it gives me determination not to let this setback be anything more than just a setback.

More tomorrow.

All is well.
