We left Cocos Keeling under a grey sky with the rain just starting to fall. A short reach up to the edge of the atoll and then a gybe over to point straight at Mauritius, some 2300 miles away.

We are now a week into the trip and it’s been a mixed bag. It has squalled for the first few days, followed by strong winds and just one day of sunshine. It’s getting colder as we go south and the swell coming from the east combined with the one coming from the south makes for an uncomfortable ride.

The moon has been shining for us, so even when the clouds have been covering it the skies are still lit with a silver glow. Last night we had the first full night of stars and moon, only clouding over just before dawn.

Fishing has been good, so far we’ve managed 4 mahi-mahi and a wahoo, but things seem to have gone quiet since we arrived in the middle of nowhere. Luckily we provisioned for it and stocked up in Australia with some great meat and superb shrimp.
