We are at a lovely anchorage off Contadora, crystal clear turqouis water, gentle waves foaming over the rocky shoreline and sandy beaches. Robert has been cleaning the crustaceans off the hull, while Stewart, Kirsten and I are washing the city soot from the decks. It feels wonderful to be away from the industry of the canal and the filth of the city air.
The ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) fleet have been showing up in the various anchorages and are well on their way to Australia. I am sure we will be seeing them throughout French Polynesia.
The Pearl Islands were named in Pre-Colombian times. They are a group of two hundred or more islands and islets, many timy and uninhabited, located 48 kilometers off the Pacific coast of Panama. Pearls may be found in this area. The 31 carat "peregrina" pearl came from these islands and was given to Queen Mary Tudor of England in 1513. Upon her death in 1558 it was given to the Crown of Spain. In 1808, Joseph Bonaparte, elder brother of Napoleon, was forced to leave his position as King of Spain with the defeat from French forces in the Battle of Vitoria. He took the peregrina pearl and it was then passed on to several characters in history until it was sold to Richard Burton at a Sotheby's auction for $37,000 USD, He gave it to his wife Elizabeth Taylor. In December 2011, it was sold as part of her jewelry collection for 10.5 million USD mounted on a diamond Cartier necklace.
All is well, Cheers from Breeze
