We took a car to explore the north coast of Trinidad, which we already knew
from our sea arrival is bounded by steep forested hills. However, the
tortuous roads and dense undergrowth were still a surprise. Bamboo clumps
grew 30 feet high. Along the way we encountered some very poor housing with good
quality developments interspersed. Our objective was Maracas Bay, a well
known and popular weekend destination for local people. Here was a lovely
sandy bay well provided with restaurants, small shops, beach tables and
well-kept public conveniences (yes – we tested them!).
The vultures (“Corbeau”), which abound on Trinidad, found the refuse
containers irresistible.
The local fast food speciality is Bake & Shark, a fancy name for fried
shark fillets in a bun. Still, it made a change from the Kentucky Fried
Chicken restaurants which are common in the
towns. |
