Sitka, Alaska!

Well, we are not aboard Melos right now: the first time
since we left Seabrook on May 12. The boat is still in
Charleston, SC but on Thursday we left to fly to Alaska and
here we are in Sitka. What a contrast: 6 weeks to sail from
Seabrook to Charleston; 24 hours to travel a greater
distance diametrically across the US by plane. Technically
we arrived yesterday as it was after midnight on Thursday
that we actually landed here so, with a long day of travel
and little sleep I didn’t get to update this blog yesterday.

We are visiting our friend Becky who moved here to work six
months ago. Sitka is located in the southern peninsular of
Alaska where the state is a narrow (relatively) coastal
strip along the Western edge of Canada. But we are still at
59° North which is further North than the South of England
where we were originally headed. Our plan is to stay here
for a few days and enjoy the cool air, the snow capped
mountains rising straight from the ocean. Yesterday we took
a short trail through the woods adjacent to where we are
staying and hopefully we will see more today.

Meanwhile, we have some more decisions to take regarding
Melos. Should we leave her in Charleston; should I try again
to fix the engine or should I get someone do it; or should
we replace the engine? Should we truck the boat back to
Seabrook and then deal with the problem there? No decisions
yet but I will let you all know as soon as we have made
them. For now we will just enjoy our time here.
