Monday, the first day at sea and orientation talks on and about Cuba from the Fathom tour guides and on Tuesday we arrive at our first port of call Santiago de Cuba.  Ashore by 10.30 we arrange to change our money into tourist dollars called cuc’s, 1$US to 1$cuc.  We join a very organised coach tour with very good guides, all coaches are government owned and tour guides and drivers are employed by the government and we were told how much to tip each driver and guide, how much for street entertainers, waiters, bar staff, the wages in Cuba are very low and the local people rely very much on the tips from tourists.

By 17.00hrs we are back onboard and begin an overnight sail to Cienfuegos, ashore at 13.30 Wednesday 23rd January

Back on board by 15.30 and on underway by 19.00hrs for Havana.  I thoroughly enjoyed the life on board ship, there was plenty to do with various talks, films, music and relaxing time in some luxurious public rooms.  Claire’s friend from Boca Grande, Edie Gardner was on board with daughter in law, Liz as well as Esta and Gustavo, so we could catch up over drinks and discuss the day and then go to our various pastimes.

  And so onto Havana……
