Well its amazing the difference between islands. Bora Bora isnt as nice
as Nuku Hiva. The people are unfriendly. They wont pick up hitchikers.
We spoke to another boat here who said when he tried to hitch, even
the bus pulled away on him after stopping just in front. The driver
seemed to see it as a good joke.
Perhaps not surprisingly the police here carry guns, Tazers,
truncheons and cuffs. We asked a local about it and was told that this
island is different to all the others. It is fiercely tribal, even
between villages a hundred meters apart, but whats really different to
the other islands in this part of the pacific is when they drink, they
become violent. Very violent. Hence the firepower on the gendarmes. We
are told that the islands just next door are much friendlier and dont
have the same aggressive tendencies.
We have organized our deposit refund and are ready to head out again.
Just waiting on an uncooperative weather system.
Our next stop is Suwarrow(new name is suvarov) owned by the Cook
Islands, its a fly speck in the middle of a big puddle. Only
inhabitants are a family that acts as caretakers for the island and the
national park reef. Legend has it the place is full of sharks but is
spectacular. Looking forward to it.
