Thursday 5th September

Grey skies, rain and a cold wind did not make for a promising start to the day so along with Balvenie, we opted to make a late start for our sail down to Maple Juice Cove.

We finally got underway around 1115 hours and Balvenie led the way under full sail and the challenge was laid down. We followed them out of Rockland and were soon barrelling along at 8.5 knots and appearing to be catching them up. La Adventura (Patti & James) called us on the radio for a quick chat as they were heading into Rockland hoping to meet up with us, so again we had managed to mess things up a bit!  We did manage to catch up with Balvenie but then the wind fell away and we bore away onto a run we made a bad tactical error (read ‘complete cock up’) and they eased away into the sunset. Well actually they sailed pretty much the whole way to Maple Juice, whereas we licked our wounds and opted to motor rather than continue to try to dodge round fields of lobster buoys with nil steerage.

We made our way up the St George’s River to the very pretty anchorage in Maple Juice Cove where we anchored in glorious sunshine and sat and waited for the dogged sailors on Balvenie to make their way there to join us. Once they had arrived and got organised they came over for drinks which turned into a BBQ supper as well. Fantastic sunset and a really lovely evening in such a peaceful and protected spot. But all these illusions were to be shattered during the night……
