Monday 26th August

We had planned an early start to the day to get the best of the tidal flow, but the grey sky and intermittent rain rather dampened our enthusiasm.

But we did get underway by 0730 and we weaved our way through the hordes of lobster buoys and out into the open sea wearing full waterproofs to combat the cold wind and moderate rain. But we were in luck generally as the forecast SW wind did not kick in until the afternoon by which time we had covered the 40 odd miles to Port Clyde. Sadly we only managed to sail for a few hours, but for the rest we motorsailed at least getting some lift from the sails until we were headed by the veering wind.

On arrival at Port Clyde we choose this time to pick up a town buoy rather than anchor round to the north and this gave us a lovely view of this pretty town and its working lobster fishing wharves. We launched the dinghy to take another look round the small town and to pay our mooring fee in the grocery store. We went into the grocery store and asked about wifi and the girl told us that there was wifi but she was not allowed to tell us the code! We asked if there was anywhere else and she shrugged her shoulders and said she didn’t know – and that was that!  Upstairs there is one of the many art galleries that populate this and many other Maine towns, but this one is staffed by a lovely lady who had been very interested in our exploits last year and we had left her with our card so she could follow the blog. This year when we went in, she struck up a chatty conversation and when Sarah mentioned what we were doing, she proceeded to tell Sarah all about this couple whose blog she had followed avidly last season. It was at the point where she mentioned the broken leg that the penny dropped with Sarah and she was able to explain that it was our blog she was following. (Hi Bobby) In addition to this, when I asked Bobby about wifi she immediately said that we could use the free wifi belonging to the store downstairs and gave us the code which she said was supposed to be for visitors! So we settled down in a corner of the art gallery and caught up with our emails.

Sarah had been feeling rather under the weather for the entire day and so we had a muted evening and an early night as hopefully we are meeting up with our friends David and Candy who are staying in a family home near Boothbay Harbor and will need all of our energy.
