As indicated yesterday the weather forecast continues to be poor going south (far too much wind and in the wrong direction). So we duly set off at just after 8.00am NE, for a 37 mile crossing to Elba. The first couple of hours we motored until the wind filled in rather more from the East than the SE wind forecast. However this enabled us to sail close hauled at a great pace 6/7knots.

About an hour into the trip we caught up with a small trimaran which then followed us all the way to Elba – nice having some company.

Nearing Elba we spotted something floating in the water – lucky we didn’t hit it – as it turned out to be a large fridge freezer. Might well have made a big dent if we had hit it.

Early afternoon we passed the NE corner of Elba and made our way along the North Coast to the Capital Portoferraio – the home of Napoleon whilst in exile.

Shortly off for a nice Italian meal.

Tomorrow we intend making the short 10 mile hop to the mainland to enable Phil and Rick to take a train to Pisa airport for the flight home to Bournemouth.
