Unfortunately for me, I have been given the unenviable task of writing
something about Figueira Da Foz, literally the rivers mouth opening,
Figueira for short, the city we are currently moored up in. Well what can I
say other than that it has a funny name and is certainly nothing like Porto,
our last delightful stop! Okay so it's a holiday resort with a massive sandy
beach situated on the mouth of the river Mondego and has one of the biggest
Casinos of the Iberian Peninsula. It also has a fort where Wellington
stayed. Those facts were courtesy of Mr Google. Well we left the calm marina
at Porto and sailed straight out into very large and scary Atlantic rollers.
Liz and I didn't like this very much at all, so having taken our sea
sickness tablets we proceeded to sleep most of the day away. Fortunately we
managed to wake up in time to see the coast line leading into Figueira which
is actually very pretty with long sandy beaches, and the large white castle
we saw on the hillside, on closer inspection with the bino's turned out to
be the cement works, still it looked nice from a distance! The entrance to
the marina was a bit hairy to get into with the big rollers coming at us
from behind, we were almost surfing in on them which is not a good thing I
can tell you. Just have a look on Youtube for surfing yacht crashes. Anyway
Ian managed to get us in safely and we moored up in the marina, Carlos was
the very helpful marinero. On the port side of Sea Flute is the old town
with shops and a few cafes and on the starboard side is the ugly industrial
harbour so we only look out of the port side windows. We will be staying
here for two nights which will be more than enough time. We took a foray out
into the old town today to have a look which probably took all of twenty
minutes to walk around. Actually, there was a beautiful church a few streets
back from the marina so I went in leaving Dave and Tom exasperated outside,
(Tom calls this my church visiting holiday) I had a few words with the Big
Man and my Mammy, she would be proud of me I know. We did find a nice family
run restaurant on our little walk so have booked that for this evening.
Hopefully the food will be as good as the rest we have sampled here in
Portugal. Perhaps I'll remember to let you know whether it was or not, in
the next blog. Ta Ta for now. Lindy x
