After a fairly lazy start, we had a few jobs to do before we left such as provisioning and paying the marina fees, we said bon voyage to the crew of Festina Lente (Discovery 6). This boat has done 67,000 miles so we have some catching up to do. It was great to see another Discovery in the same marina - the first time this has happened and we spent some time swapping stories, but largely picking their brains! Nick, the skipper, kindly gave us a book he has written about his first circumnavigation, which is interesting as this is similar to what we are doing and, on an almost identical boat.
We left about 11am to go to Albufeira. What a fabulous day! Today was the first time we could sail without any time restraints or deadlines at all and we set off to do 20 miles and just sailed along fairly slowly in more or less the right direction in the sunshine. It would have been completely relaxing if not for all the damn lobster pots which literally litter the sea - we did pick 1 up one point (I was supposed to be keeping a lookout - whoops) but no harm done as it just popped out after we had dragged it a short way. The wind was light but it wasn't a problem. Having such a short distance to cover meant it didn't really matter what time we arrived - although we did get the last berth available for a boat our size.
On our way out of Lagos we were able to fully appreciate the scenery and coastline which had largely gone unnoticed on the way in due to the slightly challenging weather. The coast is rugged and full of caves and grottos all the way along - it really is stunning!
We had been told that Albufeira is quite a new resort (so new it is not even mentioned in our guidebook), so were not sure what to expect, but we had been warned about the colours they painted the apartments in the marina - a bit like Tobermory but unfortunately not so subtle! They are certainly eye-catching!
After yet another boat clean today we plan to go out and see what there is in the marina area as the town is about 2 miles away. We will probably go there tomorrow afternoon once we have finished all our jobs. We have managed to make quite a list whilst sailing today - whoever said sailing was fun?
