Title: Huon Valley

Friday 19th February 2016

We left Kingston, just south of Hobart, and decided to take the coast road.  Our drive took us round Blackman’s Bay to Tinderbox Nature Reserve.  We carried on through Ninepin and Randall’s Bay, then followed the banks of the Huon River north up to Huonville, where we took a 180 degree turn south again to drive down the opposite bank of the Huon River to Geeveston.  From here we took a minor road into the Tahune Forest Reserve and drove deep into the forest before finding our stop for the night, Airwalk Lodge.

Amusing signage at Ninepin.                                                       Lovely view over Randall’s Bay.

Lunch stop at a quiet stretch of beach.

We had decided to spend a little extra on tonight’s accommodation to be right inside the forest just a short walk from the Tahune Airwalk, to avoid the long drive back to Geeveston at the end of the day.  It also meant that we could enjoy the sounds of the night in the forest, and were free to explore after dark.  Day visitors are required to leave by dusk.

Our ‘bungalow’ was a mobile home around the back of the main Lodge, modern, fully self-contained, very comfortable and very quiet.

Not a lot of room to spare in the bedroom!                                                           The electric barbecue worked a treat!

We went for an initial look around once the car was unpacked, then settled down for a quiet evening ready for a day of exploration tomorrow.
