| Tucked up in a quiet corner of the Saco River gives one a feeling of being truly remote; and our winding, tree lined, 15 minute dinghy ride up to town only reinforces this feeling. However, it wasn’t until today that we realised just how far into hunting country we have come. Having finally selected our winter berth, we took the hire car for a drive around the area and went to visit L. L. Bean a famous outdoor shop and an icon of the far north. Established in 1912, it is still surrounded by the, now gentrified, trading posts of past fur trappers and Native Americans. Selling everything from canoes to snow shows with fishing and hunting gear in-between, it makes Cotswolds Outdoor look positively tame.  Their “window dresser”is definitely of the “Moose Head on the wall variety” Their in-shop display of stuffed animals leaves one in no doubt that this is not a destination for the modern day Vegan.Just to the left of the gun section is a display of meat grinders, slicers, duck presses and vacuum packing machines to ensures that the bounty keeps fresh for the winter.  Raw meat eaters only may apply for their loyalty card. After dropping off the car we repaired to the local bar, in an old mill at the head of the river, to get over the shock of how expensive winter berthing is going to be. Our British voices were overheard and the head brewer, running their in-house craft ale micro brewery, proudly showed us round his entirely British-made brewing equipment.  The whole lot made and shipped from Peter Austin’s factory in Wimborne, Dorset. He even imports British malt for the process! |
