The other day I was mentioning Andreas pirate ship that takes up to much space in our boat. Living in a small space makes you obsessed with things that are small on the outside and big on the inside. I actually used that question when looking for good backpack once. And funny enough most sales people would seriously respond by showing me what they thought was big on the inside and small on the outside…
You could say there are three things that live up to it , foldables, inflatables and digital.
Digital is obvious, if you can have all your books in an e reader, that is great. I actually have more than 2000 books digitally. Very useful. As long as your e-reader works well.
If I can give you a word of advice, stay away from Kindle. The system is great but mine has started to loose the ”ink” at the bottom, and Amazon will not deal with that.
They would have if it had happen a few months ago, but now it is past warrant. Don’t you love that? Things that pass away the day after your warranty date?
Interesting enough companies do treat warranties very different. North Face for instance gave us a new duffle without any discussions when the one we had, stopped being a good duffle. Because the zippers got stuck.
My foldable kayak (Feathercraft) started to loose the inner material that makes some parts water tight, and Feathercraft replaced it without discussion and that thing was from 2005!
We have wonderful examples from companies that will fix what failed beyond warranties. But some just stick to it and make you really mad.
Warranties should not last a life time, by the way, they should. Like a marriage, it SHOULD last a life time but it does not often do that. Actually I read in the paper (well on the computer) that January and February seems to be the months when warranties on marriages go out. In Sweden we have the most amount of divorces as the New Year comes in with fire works and champagne. So when you partner gives you a kiss at New Years eve, it might be a kiss of good bye.
Warranties are funny, you have to read the fine print. Or they are not funny if it is serious business. At sea it is. There is a boat called Jeanneu Oceanis. Now listen to the name- Oceanis.
Well we have met a Tieck couple that bought a brand new “Oceanis” to go sailing around the world. They lost their rudder in Panama. They made contact with the factory and claimed the problem within the three-year warranty they had.
Well the fine print was that they had sailed over the Atlantic and when you sailed so far the warranty did not work any more…
Jeanneus are famous for their building structures, if you take them to the ocean lots of people claim the interior falls apart (Like IKEA furniture but the other way).
So we can just conclude that warranties are as insurances, you have to read the fine print or you will be stranded at your own cost.
Why do they do the fine print? You would ask. They should make it the HUGE print when you buy it:
THIS BOAT IS ONLY UNDER WARRANTY AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT PUT IT IN THE WATER.

THIS INSURANCE WILL ONLY REPLACE THE VALUE OF YOUR PROPERTY IF IT IS BRAND NEW. IF IT IS OLDER THAN 1 DAY IT IS HALF THE VALUE. 2 DAYS ¼ OF THE VALUE. 3 DAYS NO VALUE LEFT.

THIS E BOOK WILL ONLY BE REPLACED IF YOU CLAIM A PROBLEM WITHN 6096 HOURS AFTER YOU BOUGHT IT. IF SO YOU HAVE TO SEND IT IN AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE AND WE WILL SEND A NEW AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE. IF WE FIND A DENT OR ANY SIGN OF USE WE WILL SEND THE BROKEN BACK AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE…

Can you believe this, Amazon now sends me e-mails with offers on e-books, they expect me to be happy and buy a new one! Forget it! I will use my Ipad instead (yes there is a Kindle app…)

Look at Hallberg Rassy, they give us support even when we have a boat that is from 1989. They even try to help us with things they could just ignore. When our windlass failed and Lewmar simply would not help us out with drawings Hallberg Rassy found some and scanned them for us!
Well that is what makes a brand so great, a relationship that lasts like a good old marriage.

You could claim that a Kindle does not cost as much as a boat. Right, but with a good e-reader I will continue to buy books from Amazon, and that is their business? If I move to my Ipad I can just as well buy books from the Apple store.
