Yachts are only allowed to anchor in a couple of
places and for nature visits you have to use a local boat.
We are based in Academy Bay, Santa Cruz and feel
like tourists as we get a water taxi and stroll to restaurants, cafes, ice-cream
parlours etc. Wildlife is everywhere and considers us humans to be just another
species. The Town Dock is full of Iguanas, Sally-Lightfoot crabs and sea lions.
The local fish market has an above average number of hangers-on.
Our first trip out was to see the giant tortoises
in the Santa Cruz Highlands.
The male tortoise is somewhat larger thatn the
female (for somewhat obvious mounting problems). We were apparently very lucky
to see attempted tortoise sex. Unfortunately for the male she said no and took
off between two trees that he couldn't fit through.
Murray thought this was sad, Caroline thought it
The male here is a young middle aged 100 years
