Day 2 of the trip home, and we are tacking in an easterly direction in light south easterlies. We have covered around 166 nms since we started 10.00am yesterday.
Its lovely sailing with a easy sea running, But its not getting us any
closer to NZ! The weather and routing opinion from a NZ meteorologist has us
going this way for 250 miles before tacking and heading south tomorrow morning. We will basically have head winds all the way, and I guess this route is about minimising the time spent slogging upwind. So it will be a long passage - 10 or 11 days against a
normal expectation of 8 days. Avoiding the head winds would have meant
waiting for a better window and we would not have been home by the end of
August.
We are settling into a shipboard routine - mostly consisting of catching up
with lost sleep and thinking about dinner. Chris has already started to
prepare tonight's meal and its only 2pm! He had a menu all figured out, but we
caught a tuna, requiring him to change plans. We shall see what transpires.
