July 2015, SICILY to SARDINIA, via VULCANO in the AEOLIANS, 38:25.60N 14:57.60E

29 June our daughter Olivia and boyfriend Shenton arrived in Syracusa, Sicily, they flew from Hong Kong via Rome.

We went sightseeing around Syracusa and stocked up on vegetables in the amazing market for vegetarian Livi, and provisioned for a few days sailing up the east coast of Sicily. No wind, so we motorsailed north some 46nmiles, and tied up at one of George’s well-known moorings in Taormina, as the water is very deep for anchoring. We took a taxi up to the top of Taormina, and after walking around, had a good meal at Don Camillo taverna, returning to Restless late. The next day was spent snorkelling and swimming around the caves.

3.7 we set off at 0530 with a clear view of Mt Aetna in the sunrise with porpoises jumping, as we motorsailed north to the Aeolian islands, through the Straits of Messina, with its famous whirlpool Charybdis. We watched several of the famous swordfish boats circling around the bay with their 40foot walkways on the bow, and fishermen up the masts, looking out for a swordfish, hoping to stab them with a trident as they rest on top of the water.

We anchored that afternoon after motorsailing 65nmiles, at Vulcano, and swam ashore to soak in the bubbling mudbaths, even though we knew the sulphur smell would be on our skins for days afterwards. Olivia will write the webdiary with her version of their holiday in the next few days, as we sailed west from the Aeolians and along the northern coast of Sicily, to Sardinia.
