Wednesday 15th July – Arrival Roccella Ionica

After a somewhat indifferent effort by the wind we motored into Roccella at around 10am.  This was no mean feat as we had to go round the back of the dredger working in the small harbour entrance; he assisted by shouting at me when to turn past him, so avoiding his rear rigging – by this time I was anxious as the depth was by now 2.4m as I headed for the beach surprising a few early sunbathers.

Once inside the harbour the depth was fine and we had a fairly good choice of finger pontoons; having commented on the rarity of finger pontoons on arriving at Grand Harbour marina in Malta I was surprised to find another occurrence so soon.

Otwin and Rosi had arrived yesterday and were there to catch our lines and give us a warm welcome.  It was really great to see them again and, after a short rest and giving Pyxis a hose down, we popped round for coffee – a delicious Rosi cappuccino with whipped cream topping for me.

This afternoon we tried to rest in the heat and took a late afternoon stroll with Otwin and Rosi to the supermarket, about 20 minutes away, to stock up on fresh produce.  We were all so hot when we got back that we hosed ourselves down on the pontoon before taking a more traditional shower on board.

This evening we had pre-dinner drinks aboard Pyxis and then went off to a local restaurant for food.  We were joined by another German couple who are heading west after a circumnavigation over the last two and a half years (makes our travels seems rather pedestrian – though the horror stories of some of the more pirate-ridden parts of the globe leave you glad you weren’t there).

We are pretty shattered and hoping for a quiet night and a lie in tomorrow.
