Monday 21st July – Port Sóller, Mallorca (By train to Palma)

Today we were up pretty early as we had decided to take a trip to Palma, the ‘old fashioned way’.

We caught the 8.25am tram from Port Sóller to Sóller.  It was an ancient tram that would be unlikely to pass UK safety regulations as it didn’t have any safety rails on the side where you alight.  On the way it runs along the sea front and then we seemed to pass through everyone’s back garden as the narrow track wound its way between the houses, with bright flowers in the hedges.  It really was quite charming.

We then took the old Victorian train from Sóller to Palma (a tourist attraction but well worth it, especially if you get up early to miss the tourist buses arriving and travel against the main flow).

We had planned to do this trip as we thought it would give us a good sight-seeing trip of the interior of the island; well it did in both senses of the word.  The area is very pretty and mountainous before you reach the low flat land near Palma; we went through quite a lot of tunnels on the way and one was so long and so deep, we think we did see the island from the interior !

We had a lovely day in Palma which had some clothes and shoe shops that I would have loved to have spent time in had I still been working.

We had lunch in a restaurant across from the huge marina area and then Carola and I spent a few hours in a coffee bar whilst the boys went to the chandlery.

We caught the last train back to Soller at 7.30 which was there on time – yippee for the Victorian train service (our previous experiences with taking the last train/bus have not been so lucky - see Jerez and Seville).
