3rd May   CALA D’OR

Another day of 0-2 var winds and a sea of glass. We left at 07.55 and motored along the SW coast, across the bay of Palma, passed inland of Isla de Cabrera (a protected zone) and, rounding Punta Salinas tried to see what wind we could find, without much luck. We entered this Cala (a long inlet) heading for a marina called Cala D’Or. The villas along this bit of coast were pretty high quality, attractively located in a beautiful landscape. Going into the Cala it was the same on both sides, white villas among the dark of the pines, a couple of little sandy coves with blue and green water lapping at the edge.

Entering Cala D’Or (one of three inlets splitting from our original entrance) felt like having a bit part in a billionaire’s playground. We were looking for pontoon L, which seemed to bear no relation to all the other pontoon lettering, so we floated gently along at about 1 knot max, past lovely restaurants with people relaxing on the sunny and shaded terraces, past the gleaming gin palaces moored up next to them, and finally found L, at the very end of the inlet. We moored up and got the G&T’s out. We were near the showers, next to us was a Dane on his way back from Turkey.

Julia went off to explore and came back later having found tourist info office, to enquire into bookings for ferries from Menorca to sort out return flight issues. Once more to eat in a good restaurant – which looked very nice, but actually wasn’t that great.

On the ARC, on which I crewed a couple of years agao, people commented on how much of the blog was about food! It’s true – it was a focal point of the day at sea, it gave styructure, and there wasn’t that much else happening! On this trip, being ashore every night, there is always something new to try, however I eat very little through the day, so I am unlikely to return having gained a couple of stone….!

We covered 49 NM today
