We're in 20 knots of wind from the south west and making a steady 5 knots with the 'trinquette' -  staysail. We have a long way to go and we're not in a hurry, we could carry more sail but then both the crew and the boat would be working a lot harder. Gran Canaria is disappearing into the haze and our heading is 171; a little off course but we hope the wind is going to veer northerly during the night and bring us around towards our destination at Ihla do Sal.

I never put some much effort into preparing for a journey as I have during the last few months for today's departure. In September 1974 I walked out of my parents house and set off overland to Kathmandu. I recall my preparations involved getting a couple of vaccinations and sewing some one hundred dollar bills into the waistband of my jeans. Thirty six years latter and I'm losing sleep over whether or not I have enough spare fuel filters and sail repair tape.
